Tessa Zettel is an artist & writer whose interdisciplinary projects imagine or enact other ways of living that are generative of sustainment, dialogue and new economies. Her redirective practice, developed as part of the Sydney-based collaborative Makeshift, encompasses sculpture and installation, drawing, printmaking, writing, live art, curating and design. Site-based and shaped by communities-of-use, Makeshift works appear largely as participatory, durational interventions in which a kind of ‘fabulist archaeology’ makes visible contested histories and possible futures.Tessa has participated in national and international exhibitions including 5th Auckland Triennial (Fresh Gallery, Auckland), Primavera 2011 (MCA, Sydney), Sister Cities Biennial: Urbanition (San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery/Carriageworks), In the Balance: Art for a Changing World (MCA, Sydney), The Right to the City (Tin Sheds, Sydney); and festivals such as ANTI (Finland), Next Wave (Melbourne) and LiveWorks (Sydney). Makeshift solo projects include A leaf from the book of cities’ (City of Sydney/NIEA), Making Time (PICA, Perth), and Make-do Garden City (4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Sydney). In 2013 Tessa will be receiving mentorship from Berlin-based artist/architect Marjetica Potrc through the Australia Council JUMP program.
